Spam on the list

jan_bartel
The amount of spam on jetty-support is indeed becoming rather irritating.

However, rather than change to subscriber-only emails, we are in the process
of changing over to the codehaus lists instead, where hopefully there are some
better controls.

Sorry this move is taking us so long to organize, but we'll get it done
as soon as we possibly can.

regards all,
Jan

Hi Jan,

From experience running open source mailing lists at ObjectStyle and
Apache, there are two fairly reliable ways to prevent list spam:

* making a list subscriber-only
* manual moderation by a human being of all non-subscriber posts

Relying on spam filter DOESN'T WORK (I can tell it by looking at the
moderation queue of Cayenne list), so I hope Codehaus provides
moderation capabilities.

And moderation isn't always practical as the list moderators may not
always have lots of time to do the job. (I speak from experience as
moderator of a Usenet newsgroup.)

So my vote is still for choice #1, which additionally will allow you to
keep the list at sourceforge and not inconvenience the list maintainers or
users.
