CP issue with serving JSP pages

Jason Tamulonis
I have an application that has Jetty built into it. To start up the server I use
a batch file that populates the classpath with a long list of jars we need and
then calls on of our classes. This class simply sets up a few things and starts
up the Jetty server. Everything seems to be working fine on the server side and
basic jsp and html pages are being served, but for some reason the
compiler(javac) that’s being called to generate the jsp pages can't see the jars
on the original classpath used to start up the server.

Really the only 2 things that don't work are the only 3rd party jars we use on
the jsp pages those being Java Advanced Imaging and JFreeChart. When any jsp
page tries to use either class from either of these jars they throw class not
found errors. I have had the server print out classpath that it has it all of
the jars are there and correct.

I have to be missing some kind of setting telling the jetty server where to get
jars from for the javac compiler or something along those lines.

The only thing I can't do is moving the jars into the JDK I need to keep the jar
files within the apps directory structure somewhere.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
    Jason

Is this Jetty 5 ?
Do you have "fork" on or off for JSP compliation?

My best advice would be to make sure tools.jar is on the classpath for
your app, and make sure that jspc is set to NOT fork.
(The fork setting is typically configured as a parameter to the jsp
servlet in the webdefaults.xml file)

Yeah I tried that and it didn't seem to change anything. Sorry I forgot to
mention that. To you have to tell it specifically to look there?

I am a bit new to all of this so just to clarify where the web-INF/lib
directory should be. I don't think it matters because I tried every logical
place. Is it

<Jetty Home>/WEB-INF/lib
<WebAppHome>/WEB-INF/lib
<WebAppHome>/root/WEB-INF/lib

I tried all 3 and it has no effect. I thought they where supposed to get
automatically detected there as well but for some reason it isn't working
for me.

Here, I should expect.

WEB-INF should be in the root of the context, so if you do this:

  <Call name="addWebApplication">
    <Arg>/</Arg>
    <Arg>/home/russell_howe/projects/website/webroot-jetty/</Arg>

for example, then WEB-INF should be

/home/russell_howe/projects/website/webroot-jetty/WEB-INF

Jason,

WEB-INF/lib is relative to the webapp directory. What version of Jetty
are you using? Can you turn debug on and see the JSP classpath that
Jetty has created?

Jan

This is Jetty 5.1.3 and the webdefaults.xml has fork as false
but once again I'm new to jetty and not sure that its in the right spot
even though there is a webdefaults.xml in the jetty jar already.

Jetty 5.1.3, I tried searching around the site to see how to turn debug on and I
tried adding -DDEBUG to my batch file command but it didn't seem to have any
effect that I could notice, which might be because our app launches a jetty
server  from inside of it?  Sorry about all the quetions but how would I turn on
debug and find out hte JSP classpath that Jetty created?

Thanks!

Re: CP issue with serving JSP pages

Hi Jason,

There's a tutorial entry on logging at
http://jetty.mortbay.org/jetty/tut/logging.html#introduction

If you set up your Jetty instance programmatically, you will have
to follow some of the steps illustrated as xml config in code
instead, but it will be very straightforward.

Jan

The JAI throws this error... Looking at this log makes me even more unsure
as to what is really wrong

According to the stack the last piece of our code the executes is this and I
confirmed the variables have valid values... I'm going to post this on the
JAI website as well to see if they can come up with anything.

Re: CP issue with serving JSP pages

jan_bartel
Jason,

Regarding the JFreeChart error: why do you have 3 copies of
the jfreechart jars of 2 different versions on your classpath:

C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\lib\jfreechart-1.0.0-pre2.jar;
C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\webapps\root\WEB-INF\lib\jfreechart-0.9.6.jar;
C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\webapps\root\WEB-INF\lib\jfreechart-1.0.0-pre2.jar;

Try removing the unneeded extra copies and see if things work better.

regards
Jan

Re: CP issue with serving JSP pages

In reply to this post by Jason Tamulonis
Jason,

Regarding the JFreeChart error: why do you have 3 copies of
the jfreechart jars of 2 different versions on your classpath:

C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\lib\jfreechart-1.0.0-pre2.jar;
C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\webapps\root\WEB-INF\lib\jfreechart-0.9.6.jar;
C:\Project\neuroinfo\neuroinfoApp\webapps\root\WEB-INF\lib\jfreechart-1.0.0-pre2.jar;

Try removing the unneeded extra copies and see if things work better.

regards
Jan

Thats a by product of me adding all the jars to the WEB-INF directory in the
webapp. I had the same errors when it was just the first one but I fixed it so
only one would be on the classpath and I get the same thing.

Re: CP issue with serving JSP pages

Jason,

If you want to know for sure if a defaultweb.xml file is being used... put a
syntax error in it :-)

I assume the class not found errors are coming during the compilation phase
and not during the execution phase.

Jetty tries to make a traditional file list style classpath and passes
it to Jasper - but if you have a classpath that cannot be converted
to a list of files - then this will not work.

You can try setting the classpath manually on the jasper servlet
in defaultweb.xml

Better yet - precompile the jsps and then you do not need a compiler at
runtime!

cheers
